VAT is compulsory is your annual taxable sales are over £90,000 or you are intending to pass this within the next 30 days. If it is less then this, it is optional to register for it.

You can register for annual VAT, monthly VAT, or quarterly VAT and the submission and payments (if required) are due 1 month and 7 days after the period ends.

Due to making tax digital, all VAT returns must be submitted through a registered software and cant be made direct with the HMRC. A list of these softwares is available on the HMRC site.
